National Weather Service issues storm watches, warnings

EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - The National Weather Service issued a series of storm warnings Sunday afternoon for East Texas and Deep East Texas.

A tornado warning was issued for Jasper and Newton counties through 7 p.m. Sunday.

This story will update as warnings are issued and expire.

Earlier in the evening, a tornado warning was issued for Sabine and San Augustine counties through 5:30 p.m. That warning has since expired. A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for Smith County through 5:30 p.m. That warning has also expired.

A flash flood warning for Sabine and San Augustine counties remains in effect through 8:15 p.m.

The NWS issued this statement regarding storms in the area:

.SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SOUTHWESTERN SABINE PARISH... SOUTHEASTERN ANGELINA...SOUTHERN SAN AUGUSTINE AND SABINE COUNTIES UNTIL 615 PM CDT... At 530 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Rosevine to 6 miles northwest of Rockland. Movement was east at 15 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with these storms. Locations impacted include... Milam, Hemphill, Pineland, Rosevine, Zavalla, Bronson, McElroy, Yellowpine, Columbus and Dolan.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service. If on or near Sam Rayburn, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

The NWS also issued a weather statement regarding areas in Smith, Rusk, Upshur and Gregg counties:

...SIGNIFICANT WEATHER ADVISORY FOR NORTHEASTERN SMITH...NORTHERN RUSK...SOUTHWESTERN UPSHUR AND GREGG COUNTIES UNTIL 615 PM CDT... At 535 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Hawkins to Timpson. Movement was northeast at 15 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with these storms. Locations impacted include... Longview, Henderson, Kilgore, White Oak, Gladewater, Overton, Tatum, Big Sandy, New London, Clarksville City, East Mountain, Pinehill, Liberty City, West Mountain, Lakeport, Winona, Easton, Union Grove, Warren City and Rolling Meadows.
