Better East Texas: Roseanne cancellation raises many questions

(KLTV) - What an incredible journey for the ABC program Roseanne and the decision by ABC to cancel the program after a tweet by the show's star and namesake, Roseanne Barr.

We continue to see careers derailed by the use of social media. This most recent case of Roseanne's tweet was severe and offensive. Now, I have had feedback on why Roseanne was canceled and The View gets a pass when criticizing President Trump. Both have gotten very personal, but Roseanne went at least one step farther, and it crossed a line.

It doesn't mean that other network talent have not been offensive.  Joy Behar finally apologized for offending Christians – but she wasn't canceled. But it is obvious that Roseanne went too far. Just like comedienne Kathy Griffin went too far when she posted a picture of a photo shoot where she was portrayed as holding up the severed head of President Trump. Her career took a giant step backwards and the move and subsequent blowback cost her a load of money and credibility.

So, Roseanne tweeted, and got fired. In this case, it was the right thing to do. It doesn't mean that others don't deserve the same, but as a culture, we needed to draw line somewhere and it has finally been drawn.  Hopefully, this is a turning point where some amount of decorum returns to the political and personal stage – if even for a little while – and that will make for a Better East Texas.
