Texas Game Wardens Help Rescue Thousands Stranded In New Orleans

Texas Game Wardens were some of the first on the ground to help rescue those stranded in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. One hundred Texas Game Wardens have headed to they city since last Tuesday. Twenty-four of those game wardens are from East Texas.

Captain Larry Hand, the district supervisor for the Texas Parks and Wildlife was one of those helping get people to safety. He says one of the hardest parts was convincing some of those trapped to come with them. "Many folks were reluctant to leave their homes. They thought that in their minds things would be back to normal in a few days and, 'why should I leave?' We had to convince them and were not always successful," said Hand.

The captain says no more game wardens are scheduled to go to Louisiana, but their work continues. They will spend the next days repairing boats that were damaged during their search and rescue operations.
