More than 2,000 East Texans have volunteered and gone through Red Cross training.

At this time, additional volunteers are not required and the Red Cross is not planning to offer another training session. Officials are requesting that volunteers be patient about being called up, because they will be called as they are needed.

The East Texas Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help accept food donations, log in
the donations and help distribute items. Please contact the food bank for more information, 903-597-FOOD.

Licensed doctors and nurses will continue to be needed. Northeast Texas Public Health District is helping to organize these volunteers. The Northeast Texas Public Health District working with the Red Cross is now coordinating and scheduling licensed nurses (RN/LVN) and support staff for the Red Cross shelters in Smith County. The following is needed:


  • Nurses and other staff for essentially all shifts to provide 24/7 coverage.
  • Shifts are 4 hours long to ensure coverage.
  • No special Red Cross training is required to provide this clinical service.
  • Call 903-535-0028 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. After hours call 903-539-4688.
  • If nurses/support staff have called in within the last week and not received a call back, please call this number.
  • If nurses or support staff have been scheduled earlier and are available again please call to identify time availability.
  • Contact for nursing issues beyond scheduling will be referred to Linda Oyer, RN, Chief Operating Officer/Director of Nurses.
