Cases against bikers flounder 3 years after Waco shootout

WACO, Texas (AP) - Three years after a gunfight in Waco killed nine bikers, Texas prosecutors are struggling to convict anyone in the deadliest biker shooting in U.S. history.

They've narrowed the number of cases to 25 from 154 bikers initially indicted but still face daunting problems.

The lead prosecutor is a lame duck, having lost the Republican primary for re-election back in March. A new prosecutor won't be elected until November.

In an effort to stop the melee between Cossacks and Bandidos biker gangs, police opened fire, and ballistics evidence shows that police bullets struck four of the nine dead, at least two of them fatally.

Guns, knives and other weapons recovered at the scene were tossed into the back of a SWAT team vehicle, leading to problems sorting out who killed whom.
