Van Zandt County investigating death of man shot outside residence by homeowner

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The Van Zandt County is releasing details about the investigation into the death of a man, who was found shot outside a residence in March.

Rickey White, of Grand Saline, was found dead outside a residence located in the 200 block of VZ County Road 1216 around 4:30 a.m. on March 15.

According to Sgt. Jake Smith with the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office, deputies received a call in regards to a prowler outside the residence. When they arrived on scene they found White shot to death outside the home.

The homeowner told deputies that White used to live on the property and had moved out after a year of living there. The homeowner told police he shot White and was defending himself after White charged at him.

Deputies say there was no indication that White was armed.

Sgt. Smith says the homeowner is a person of interest and that the investigation is ongoing at this time.  White's death is being investigated as a homicide and the Texas Rangers are also assisting in the investigation.
