LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - The growing opioid crisis is impacting people around the country, but also right here in East Texas.
The Longview Partners in Prevention is addressing the issue by collecting data through their annual survey. A new question on the list is regarding opioid abuse.
"Longview is actually in the top twenty-five for opioid abuse, and we're number seventeen," Coalition Coordinator for Longview Partners in Prevention Whitney Pierce said. "It's sad, and so they recognize that we have an issue in Texas and we have to fix it."
The survey allows people to anonymously report their knowledge of substance use, problems or concerns.
Preliminary data from the surveys already show the Longview community sees a significant problem with opioid misuse. As the national death toll from opioid addiction rises, Texas is now suing a national drug manufacturer for aiding in the epidemic.
"My office is holding Purdue Pharma accountable for fueling the nation's opioid epidemic by deceptive marketing of its prescription opioid painkillers," Texas Attorney General ken Paxton said.
In a statement sent to us, Purdue Pharma officials said they deny these allegations and look forward to presenting their defense.
In a press release, the attorney general's office said the sales of Purdue Pharma opioids are worth billions of dollars every year nationwide.
