SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Multiple East Texas law enforcement agencies gathered Tuesday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The annual ceremony's organizers invite families of those who have passed to participate. Terri Higdon attended in memory of her husband, DPS Trooper Daniel Higdon. He was killed in what she calls "a freak accident" in 1983.

"It has been 35 years for me, but they're not forgotten," said Higdon.

The Smith County Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony has been held every year since the '90's.

"We've lost a lot this past year, I've noticed, and I just think it is really great that we do this and that we recognize the men and women who put their lives on the line every day," said Higdon.

Despite the heat, about 150 community members attended. Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said, "When you see all the people out there in support of the families… I just think it is great."
