TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

City of Tyler:

On Monday, May 14, Tyler Pounds Regional Airport began the most complex phase of the Runway 4-22 Rehabilitation Project. This portion of work is one of the last major tasks to complete the pavement rehabilitation for the runway project.  The contractor, SpawGlass, is planning to work seven days a week in order to meet the 120-day schedule of this phase.  It is expected that work will also take place at night.

“During this phase of work over the next four months, our contractors will be utilizing Highway 64 West and Dixie Road to haul materials for the project,” said Airport Manager Davis Dickson. “Travelers can expect several trucks entering the highway from the airport. We want to encourage all drivers to use caution around the airport as the contractor progresses through this critical portion of the runway job.”

Those flying out of Tyler should not feel any impacts due to the construction. Tyler Pounds Regional Airport has three runways and only one runway will be closed in this phase of work.

“Safety is our priority for the public and airport crews,” said Dickson. “Our goals are to accomplish this phase of work in a compressed timeframe to minimize impacts to the airport.”

An open house on Thursday, May 17 from 10 to 11 a.m. will host those interested in a walking tour of the Runway 4-22 Rehabilitation Project. It will highlight the construction that has already been completed and the work that is currently underway. Those in attendance should meet at the Historical Aviation Memorial Museum, located at 150 Airport Dr. This initiative ties into the City of Tyler’s #TimeToBuild campaign that will be announced at the annual State of the City on Wednesday, May 16.

Once this phase is complete, Runway 4- 22 will fully open to a new extended length of 8,330 feet.  The runway pavement section includes 14 inches of concrete placed over 12 inches of a heavy base section.  The runway will be capable of carrying much heavier loads and provide extended length for landing and takeoffs.
