LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - An event Friday brought many smiles to the faces of some Longview children. It was the annual Track and Field Day for Special Education children.
Most of these kids anticipate this day all year long.
LISD Adaptive Physical Education Teacher Tommy Jamerson is the coordinator of the event and is an instructive coach to special needs kids across the school district.
"Oh, I have interaction with eight campuses. They love seeing me come because when they see me come they feel that they're fixing to get an opportunity to do something that they like," Jamerson said.
There was an unexpected side effect that came with the job.
"It warms my heart greatly. I didn't know that I would feel this way about this job when I took it but just working with these kids and (seeing) how much they appreciate somebody going out of their way to give them opportunity, then it makes you have a warm feeling inside," Jamerson said.
And he's not talking about the sunny day. The kids are ecstatic to compete every year.
Terrance Brookins, Forest Park ISS Teacher has been the voice of the event since 2003.
"When I announce their names I try to put a lot of emphasis on this: Hey you won, you're No. 1!" Brookins said.
He says they're all No. 1 in his book, and they remember that from year to year.
"The students they come, they hug, they just love me. You show an interest in them, they'll show an interest in you," Brookins stated.
Ten-year-old Alex Castro loves to run because he's:
"Fast," Alex proclaimed.
"Are you?" I asked him.
"Yeah," he replied.
"What place did you get?"
"First place," Alex smiled.
"Look at you!" I commented.
And now that the event is over, Tommy Jamerson will go back to his role at the eight schools.
"When I walk in the classroom I have to tell the kids to quiet down," Jamerson laughed.
Because the kids know that Tommy and track and field day go together like racing and medals.
It was the 13th year for the Special Education Track and Field Day at Longview High School which brings together children from five Longview ISD elementary schools, two middle schools and the high school.
