Sheriff's office: Marion County man's charge upgraded to murder after shooting victim dies

MARION COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Marion County man who was charged in connection with a shooting is now facing a murder charge, officials say.

Prentis Earl Smith II, 40, was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a May 7 shooting that injured Frederick Wayne Thomas, 28.

The Marion County Sheriff's office confirmed Friday that Smith's charge was upgraded to murder after Thomas died Thursday from his injuries.

According to a news release, the shooting incident occurred Monday morning. Emergency responders were called to Smith's residence on FM 2683 in the northeastern part of the county.

When the deputies got to the scene, they found Thomas inside the home with apparent gunshot wounds. A helicopter airlifted Thomas to University Health LSU Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The sheriff's office says the investigation is ongoing and autopsy results are pending.
