Marion County Sheriff's Office: 1 suspect in custody after man critically wounded in shooting

MARION COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 40-year-old man Monday in connection with a shooting incident that left the victim critically injured.

Prentiss Earl Smith II, a Marion County resident, is still being held in the Marion County Jail on a felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. His bond has been set at $175,000.

According to a press release, the shooting incident occurred on Monday morning. The initial 911 call was for a welfare check and possible ambulance call at Smith’s residence on FM 2683 in the northeastern part of the county.

When the MCSO deputies got to the scene, they found Frederick Thomas, 28, a Marion County resident, inside the home. He was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

A helicopter airlifted Thomas to University Health LSU Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he remains in critical condition.
Justice of Peace Lena Pope arraigned Smith Tuesday morning.

The shooting incident is still under investigation.
