LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

A suspect in the murder of a 51-year-old Longview woman is now in custody.

Within hours of the stabbing police arrested Rodrick Deshun Arkeith Elliott, 20, of DeSoto.

Thursday afternoon Longview Police Department officers were called to the 300 block of East Grand Street in Longview to investigate a homicide.

Police identified the victim as Sandy Smith, 51, of Longview.

According to a department news release, officers and detectives began contacting neighbors and residents in the area who identified a man they said was suspicious. That man was later identified as Elliott.

Detectives say they found Elliott in Gladewater and with help from East Texans, were able to link him to the homicide.

"We are appreciative and thankful for residents and concerned citizens who are aware of their surroundings, take positive steps to protect their property, and take the initiative to provide information to law enforcement," LPD said in the statement.

Elliott was arrested on a murder warrant and booked into the Gregg County Jail on $500,000 bond.
