Better East Texas: We need more Waffle House heroes

(KLTV) - We all took note of the shooting in Antioch, Tennessee in the Waffle House there, and thankfully the capture of the perpetrator.  It was a horrible lass of life but would have been much worse if not for the actions of James Shaw, Jr.

Shaw was in the Waffle House and took action to stop the carnage.  His quick thinking saved lives and ended the shooting. Hearing him speak, it was obvious he was not comfortable being called a hero, but his actions were, without a doubt, heroic.

Perhaps you have heard the quote – Adversity does not build character, it reveals it. And this is a case of the most personal and extreme of adversities where human life is in the balance. Shaw reacted courageously.  Now his character continues to be revealed as he sits through interview after interview to describe what happened.

He has been overcome with emotion at times but continues to be humble and focused on the victims and not his actions.  He has created a Go-Fund-Me account to assist the survivors in their recovery.  So, while this was a tragic, sick event, James Shaw, Jr. has shown us all what good character and helping your fellow man truly looks like.

We live in a time of very self-centered celebrations and social media magnifies that condition, so hopefully social media can be part of the outreach to the victims through Shaw's unselfish actions.  We need fewer shootings but more James Shaws, and that will make for a Better East Texas.
