WODEN, TX (KTRE) -

The Nacogdoches All-Stars are hoping they can bring home wins in the 10th annual Pineywoods Showdown for the Love Inc. and American Cancer Society charities.

When the time came for Lance Taylor to chose who to play for it was an easy choice.

"I chose it for my mother's sake," Taylor said. "Three weeks before I was selected we found out she had cancer."

The team backed Taylor's decision. Many of the players have family members that have battled cancer.

"It was hard on my family," Woden's Britney Thompson said. "We knew but it was hard. it is so important that we play for it. Cancer is so devastating for so many people. it is good to play for it."

Ashley Berry is a cancer survivor and now volunteers for the American Cancer Society. For her any donation can help.

"There are programs right here in the region that the society assist with," Berry said. "We want to eventually eradicate cancer. It doesn't matter if you can give $2 or $10. Every little bit helps."

On the boys side, Love Inc will be showcased. Love Inc. is part of a national organization. Fifteen churches In Nacogdoches County work together to make the center a clearing house for request that come into churches.

"It is our part of the Great Commission," executive director Patti Goodrum said. "We want to be able to provide for those in need."

The center is all ran by volunteers.

"We are at a place were you can do home missions in our community where you can find a need," Goodrum said.

The money raised will stay right in the county with a special fund to help pay bills for those in need.

"It is not just shooting a basketball into a goal," Central Heights senior Jacob Street said. "It is bigger than that. It is cool that we get to that and play for something bigger than ourselves."

The 10th annual Pineywoods Showdown will be Thursday at Central Heights High School. Admission to the game is $5. The games start at 6 pm.
