DA to air more evidence in eccentric heir's murder case

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Three years after the arrest of New York real estate heir Robert Durst in the fatal shooting of his best friend in Los Angeles, there's still no trial scheduled.

That could change after prosecutors begin presenting evidence Monday to persuade a Superior Court judge that Durst should be tried for murder.

The 75-year-old who was the subject of an HBO documentary that contributed to his arrest has pleaded not guilty in the December 2000 killing of Susan Berman.

Older witnesses who may not be available at a trial have given testimony at prior hearings, giving prosecutors potentially damning evidence against Durst.

The defense is fighting efforts to introduce hearsay statements that Berman told friends Durst had killed his first wife and that she helped cover his tracks.
