Smith County Sheriff suggesting budget changes after seeing decline in jailers

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Sheriff Larry Smith says he has plans to speak with commissioners about his plan to fix issues with staffing in the jail.

Sheriff Smith says his jail is down 17 jailers. He says that they are still able to maintain the 48 inmates for each jailer ratio, but only because the current jailers are working overtime.

Smith attributes the decline in employees to insufficient pay and a work environment he says most people wouldn't be able to handle.
Sheriff Smith says he does have a short term solution for the problem, but will need the help of Smith County Commissioners.

"I want to see what the possibility would be to get some part-time money where we have detention officers that would have retired and might want to work a day or two here and there, Sheriff Smith says.
Sheriff Smith says he plans on suggesting this change to the Smith County Commissioners court soon.
