GILMER, TX (KLTV) - The Upshur County Sheriff's Office is working to release details regarding the body found in Upshur County along FM 726 North.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, a couple of local residents riding ATVs called the Upshur County Sheriff's Office to report finding a dead body.
"We responded out there, and indeed, we had what appears to be a female body, in the wooded area," said Upshur County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy David Hazel said.
The sheriff's deputies have been unable to identify the woman and are seeking help from surrounding counties regarding their missing persons on file.
"There are some adjacent counties that have contacted us, and we are working with them to see if there is any validity to that," Hazel said.
While Hazel says they could not release the specifics at this time, he said they are taking the case very seriously.
"We don't know the circumstances that ended up with her there, but we have a suspicious, very suspicious set of circumstances that concern us," Hazel said. "We are treating this as a suspicious death."
Officials say they don't know how the female died, but the body has been sent for an autopsy.
"The autopsy's gonna really help us out on being able to identify the specifics where we can compare notes better than we can now," Hazel said.
While the investigation is still in the early stages, Hazel said they are still actively looking for leads on what happened and trying to identify the body.
"Questions as to whether she died there or died somewhere else and was transported there - those are the questions that we've got to figure out," Hazel said.
Officials don't think the body was there for more than a few days but they urged with information to contact the Upshur County Sheriff's Office.
