LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - It's been a controversial subject for years, and it seems to roll around every Easter. Yes, it's the great Peep debate. Some just can't wait to bite into one, and others wish they'd just stay cooped up.

Jeepers, creepers, here come the peepers and the anti-peepers. Those little marshmallow chicks sell like hotcakes this time of year, and the boxes empty quickly.

Though I spoke with a few who are on the fence, most are firmly on one side or the other.

"So what do you think, do you like Peeps?" I asked Maria Jimenez.

"I like the pink ones," Maria replied.

"Do you like Peeps?" I asked Ron Brewer.

"Yes," he replied.

"Those marshmallowy ...," I started.

"Yes. The yellow ones," he specified.

So color matters. And now, they have several, colors including green.

Mariana Hernandez had never tried a Peep, so I gave her one. She chewed with curiosity.

Suzanne Grantom said, "I don't like Peeps."

"Why don't you like Peeps?" I asked.

"Just don't like them. Can't eat them," Suzanne revealed.

"A lot of people don't like Peeps," I said to Michelle Brewer

"Oh, they don't know what they're talking about," Michelle said.

"They don't like the squishiness," I offered.

"Well that's what marshmallows are supposed to be for," Michelle stated.

Renee Huffman said," I don't care for Peeps."

"Why not?" I asked her.

"Textural thing," she replied.

"So the squishiness doesn't bother you?" I asked Maria Jimenez.

"Not really. Well, I mean it kind of does now with braces, but it's not so bad," she said.

Peeps are made by Just Born, indicating the chicks, of course. And the guy who began making Peeps in the 50s. He was a Russian named Sam Born, not to be confused with Jason Bourne, who runs around a lot.

Rebecca Jimenez said," Peeps are good to make s'mores with."

So people have differing opinions.

"It don't taste like nothing," Mariana Hernandez finally concluded after much chewing.

She's on the fence, but Mariana asked for the box.

I mean I knew they were airy, but I didn't know they were air flavored," I said to Mariana who laughed in reply.

And yes, those who didn't like Peeps said they wouldn't even eat them if they were free range.

Peeps now come in many colors and flavors like vanilla creme, sour cherry and even pancakes and syrup.
