Marshall, TX - A Marshall man has pleaded guilty to kidnapping another man at gunpoint after getting a ride from him.
Prosecuting attorney Shawn Connally said Antonyo Dontey Rivers pleaded guilty in District Judge Brad Morin's court Wednesday morning to a charge of first-degree aggravated kidnapping and accepted an eight-year prison sentence.
Rivers, 32, and Lionel Ray Wheeler, 34, of Marshall, are accused of approaching a man in May 2015 for a ride to an auto parts store. During the ride, Rivers revealed a gun and told the driver where to go. But while Rivers was distracted, the driver was able to escape and call the police. Rivers took the car and abandoned it later down the road.
Police arrested Wheeler a few days later but did not arrest Wheeler until June.
Connally said he spoke to the victim, who approved of the plea deal.
Due to the charge being of the "aggravated" variety, Rivers will have to spend at least half the sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Connally said Wheeler is serving time in prison on unrelated charges.
