KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - The scene at Laird Hill Post Office has been cleared after ATF agents inspected the mail drop box and determined there was no threat.
Officials say that the suspicious item was not a bomb but actually a device used to steal mail and that there is no threat to the public. The device has been removed without incident.
Investigators decided to act on the side of caution this morning when responding to the suspicious package. ATF was called in order to investigate due to the recent events in Austin and sufficient evidence that indicated the item could have been a bomb.
Police are now searching for the suspect responsible for the incident. The suspect is described to be a young man driving a tan pickup truck.
A heavy law enforcement presence was on the scene at Laird Hill Post Office in regards to a suspicious package.
The post office is located southwest of Kilgore.
ATF was called in to investigate the suspicious package, according to the Rusk County Sheriff's Office.
The RCSO received a call this morning from a postal worker after she arrived at work. She stated someone was messing around with the drop box outside. When they saw her they jumped into a truck and fled the scene.
The woman stated that she observed a string hanging from outside the box.
