Local Volunteers Help Hurricane Victims

Some East Texas organizations are offering free shelter and help for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Volunteers with The Salvation Army of Tyler spent the day loading up food. They plan to head to Louisiana Monday afternoon, but they're not sure where yet, until Katrina hits.

"Judging from other hurricanes this size, we've stayed as long as 28 days," Paul Smith, disaster team coordinator, said. "For example, when Hurricane Ivan came into Pensacola, we were there 28 days, feeding three meals a day."

Youth With A Mission, a Christian organization just outside Lindale, is already providing shelter to evacuees. YWAM also plans to send missionaries to Louisiana to help rebuild after the hurricane.
