TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A Smith County jury has sentenced a Tyler man to 10 years in prison following a trial in connection with his girlfriend's 15-month-old son found with a black eye and injuries to his abdomen and back.
Originally charged with first-degree injury to a child/intentionally causing serious bodily injury, the jury found Terral Deshon Carter, 26, guilty of a lesser-included charge of second-degree injury to a child/recklessly caused serious bodily injury and sentenced him to 10 years in prison on Wednesday.
Carter was arrested in September, after Smith County deputies received a call from Child Protective Services on Aug. 27 regarding a report of child abuse. The CPS worker reported seeing the child with a black eye, major bruising on the abdomen and back and he also had backed-up bowels.
An arrest affidavit states Carter injured the child "by hitting the child in the abdomen and back. The child suffered blunt force trauma to the intestines, which caused the lining of the intestine to tear and the child's stool to empty into the stomach, causing an infection."
The child's mother, Taylor Skinner, was also arrested for not reporting the crime. She is charged with state-jail felony injury to a child by omission and is scheduled for an April 30 trial.
