PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - One person was injured after a suspect led Palestine Police Department officers on a chase and exchanged gunfire with officers.
About 11 a.m. Friday, a PPD officer attempted to make a traffic stop. According to city Communications Officer Nate Smith, the person "brandished a gun and fired a shot at the officer."
The officer returned fire and the suspect fled the scene, according to a statement from the city. Officers pursued the suspect into the county where gunfire was exchanged.
One person was taken to a hospital. No officers were injured.
Chief Andy Harvey discussed the incident during an afternoon press conference. Harvey said a female driver in the vehicle was not injured and is being questioned.
The chief said police believe the suspect, who has not been identified at this time, was involved in methamphetamine distribution.
"What we're doing now is just a renewed focus on drugs in the city," he said.
Harvey said the department received information "from a credible source" about the suspect.
During the incident, Harvey said the suspect displayed a weapon.
The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident. An internal investigation is also underway in the department.
