PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - An Anderson County grand jury has indicted a Palestine woman accused in the death of an inmate at an Anderson County prison.

Sandra Jean Broadus, 56, is charged with state-jail felony criminally negligent homicide.

According to the indictment released on Friday, Broadus caused the death of Jesse Whiting, 61, by failing to provide a reasonable standard of medical care. Whiting died on Oct. 14, 2016.

According to Texas Department of Corrections spokesman Jason Clark, Broadus was an employee of University of Texas Medical Branch. Clark said the Office of Inspector General conducted an investigation into her actions and took the evidence to a grand jury.

Clark said Whiting was serving a 55-year prison sentence on three counts of aggravated robbery. He was sentenced on those charges in 1995. He had also served a five-year prison sentence on a murder conviction in 1989.
