Forced Gaza Evictions Begin

Some fierce resistance has emerged as thousands of Israeli troops forcibly remove Gaza Strip settlers from their homes after they ignored a deadline to leave voluntarily. Officials said four troops would be brought in for every person refusing to leave.

The air in Neveh Dekalim was thick with smoke from fires set by protesters. Troops were attempting to extinguish the blazes. Demonstrators also threw bottles and eggs at Israeli soldiers.

At least 1,000 people had shut themselves inside a synagogue, which could prove difficult for Israeli troops to evacuate. A grizzled colonel with tears in his eyes shook hands with a young father, cradling the man's tiny baby.

Israeli leaders say the move is essential for Israel's security. The withdrawal ends a 38-year occupation of Gaza, which is also home to 1.3 million Palestinians.
