If your children aren't back at school yet, they will be soon and so will those school speed zones. Today, we took the KLTV 7 Streets of Speed, Speed Zapper out to Patton Road in front of Dixie Elementary School. It's on Tyler's far west side out near the airport.
The posted limit is 30. But next week, when school starts, the 25 mile per hour school zone speed limit will be in effect in the mornings and afternoons. The average for the half hour turned out to be right around there, 42.8 mph-- almost 13 miles per hour over the posted speed limit now. Next week, for at least part of the day, that will be 18 over.
Later, we got some "help" from a Tyler Police Department officer who set up patrol. Immediately, the speeds fell below 30.
Tyler ISD begins classes Monday, but several school districts around East Texas started today. So, be careful. Most school zones are in effect during the hours of 7:30 to 8:30 in the morning, and from 2:30 to 4:00 in the afternoon.
