School Supply Train Opens In Longview

A simple school supply program has turned into an essential program for thousands of needy East Texas families. The 12th annual School Supply Train is going on in Longview at First Baptist Church for two days. The program provides pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, and backpacks for back to school kids. More over, children can get free immunizations, a dental check-up and dental supplies, and even a haircut if needed.

Organizers say it's a program that has grown to help people who have trouble furnishing even the simplest necessary items for their school age children.

"And I got candy and a soda and a backpack and a book and all kinds of stuff" says 2nd grader Alexis Beserra.

"They're very excited.  The families are grateful and the children are excited to be able to take that backpack and a lot of times they pick different colors.  They're just really excited and have big smiles on their faces," said junior league volunteer Karen Lane.

The supply train starts again Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 5:00 p.m. at The Roc at Fredonia and South streets.

You'll be required to bring a picture id, proof of income, proof of enrollment and shot records.
