Another Sinkhole Forming Off Of FM 724

A sinkhole in Smith County now has company. TX DOT officials say a second sinkhole has appeared near the infamous sinkhole on FM 724.

The first sinkhole was discovered at the end of June. It has grown to be about 100 feet across. The new sinkhole, which is off to the side of the road, measures about 10 feet in diameter and is one foot deep. That one was discovered late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

A company hired by TX DOT has been doing studies on the sinkhole. With the discovery of this new one, officials say the study area might be expanded. "We'll probably end up doing some seismology, some underground mapping techniques to see if there are some additional voids. We want to see if it's something that can happen elsewhere, because it obviously can," said Larry Kranz, with the Texas Department of Transportation.

At this time, TX DOT says there's no telling how soon the road might be fixed.
