Tyler Senator Filing Back-Up Bill For Teachers, Students

A new bill has just been filed in the Texas Legislature that would raise teacher's pay $1,000 each year for 2 years, restore cuts to their health insurance and fund new textbooks. It's the work of Tyler Senator Kevin Eltife and Rodney Ellis of Houston. The House and Senate are currently in a special session to pass an education reform bill. Senator Eltife says his new plan would be a back-up, just in case. "Unless we can't agree on a reform bill we can't accomplish those measures. So what we're saying is at the very least if everything falls through and we get nothing else done, we've got a bill to at least walk away and provide teacher pay raises and fund our textbooks which are priorities in this state," says Eltife.

Legislators are in recess and will be back in special session on Thursday.
