A Longview company is helping New York City firefighters escape a burning building when things don't go as planned.
This comes after a tragedy in January. Two firefighters in The Bronx jumped to their deaths. Three others were seriously injured.
A new "personal safety system" will allow the firefighters to repel from buildings by hooking a harness to a window. Those hooks are made by Crosby Lebus Manufacturing in Longview.
The New York City Fire Department says the company is the only one that makes the hooks they were looking for.
"We went to web sites, mountaineering stores," Lt. Christian Delisio said. "They had nothing that would do what we wanted it to do inside a burning building. That's where we came up with a design. And I'm not sure there's another manufacturer that we're aware of that could ever do anything like this."
The New York Fire Department is buying 13,000 hooks from Crosby Lebus to help its firefighters.
