Saudi King Fahd Dies

Saudi Arabia's King Fahd has died and his half-brother has been appointed the oil-rich kingdom's new ruler.

The announcement of Fahd's death in Riyadh came on state-run Saudi television from the country's information minister. The king was 84. He will be succeeded by Crown Prince Abdullah.

A medical official says the king's health had deteriorated dramatically since he was hospitalized in late May. At the time, officials said he was suffering from pneumonia and a fever, and in recent weeks officials had suggested his health had been improving.

Abdullah had been de-facto leader of Saudi Arabia for the past decade, since Fahd suffered a debilitating stroke.

King Fahd was considered a crucial U.S. ally who forged closer relations with Washington during his rule.
