Some people like surprises. Some people don't. If you don't, then you might not like the cakes turned out by this week's "Does It Work?" product. We've heard from dozens of you, asking us to test the Betty Crocker Bake & Fill.
The box touts it as the four piece bake set that creates amazing filled cakes.
Here's what you get. The flat "base" pan, the "tall" pan, the "insert" pan, which looks like a hat and the "dome" pan used to make round, dome-like cakes. We won't be using the dome pan for this test.
We stayed in the family and bought Betty Crocker mixes. Prepare two mixes separately and grease the inside of the tall pan. Pour the mix in the tall pan, then place the hat shaped insert pan, curve down into the tall pan. Twist it on to attach it to the tall pan and bake according to the mix instructions. The curved insert will bake a "bowl shape" into the main part of the cake. That's where the filling will go later in the process.
Now pour the mix in the flat base pan and put it in the oven. The tall pan has more mix, so it needs about a 20 minute cooking head start on the base pan.
We're going to fill the cake with ice cream, so after you pull it out of the oven, you must let it cool completely. After that's done, you're ready to fill the cake.
Let your ice cream soften a little, then spoon it into the cake's bowl shaped impression. It will take about a pint and a half. When you're done, put the base pan on top and put the cake in the freezer. We left it in there for about 45 minutes.
We probably should have let it re-freeze longer. But when we flipped it over and cut the cake, it was quite rewarding. We had a nice layer of ice cream inside our cake.
We went through the same steps again and filled it with frosting. That worked out great too.
"Does It Work?" We give the Betty Crocker Bake & Fill a "yes."
We paid $19.99 for the Betty Crocker Bake & Fill at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Target also carries it.
The direction booklet also includes instructions for filling cakes with a frosting covered layer of cake, pudding and fresh fruit.
