Army Investigates Karnack Mercury Dumping

The U.S. Army has launched an investigation into the possible dumping of toxic substances such as mercury at a former ammunition plant in East Texas. The army's criminal investigation division is investigating reports of improper disposal of asbestos and mercury while demolition was going on at the Longhorn army ammunition plant in Karnack.

A plant spokesperson said the army was informed of the illegal dumping by a former employee of the plant. The extent of the dumping, environmental impact, and who is responsible is not known at this time. A 90-day "stop-work" order has been issued while the army investigates.
