The Smith County jail project has taken another turn. This morning, Smith County commissioners unanimously voted to throw out Corplan Correction's proposal for construction of the new jail. The company had been tapped for the project until commissioners learned of a civil lawsuit against the company. It's accused of consipiring to bribe commisioners in another Texas county.
Smith County commissioners will now start the necessary paperwork that would allow other contractors to make their proposals. County Judge Becky Dempsey said, "In essence that puts us back to going back for RSPs once again. And, again, the court voted to go out for RFPs."
Judge Dempsey says the county could have the proposals from the contractors back by mid-August.
