The Smith County jail project is on hold. Earlier this week, Smith County voted to hire Corplan Corrections to build the new jail.
On Thursday, however, Smith County commissioners were provided with information from an anonymous source. The e-mail sent to commissioners included newspaper articles from the Valley Morning Star newspaper. The articles said Corplan Corrections was linked to a case in which commissioners from another Texas county received kickbacks.
After receiving this information, Smith County Judge Becky Dempsey, announced the county's decision's to put the jail plans on hold. "In light of the information contained in the Valley Morning Star article, Smith County intends to delay any further action or final decision on the Smith County jail project until the fact of the matter can be verified," said Dempsey.
There's no time frame as to when the Smith County jail matter could be resolved.
