Local Agencies Prepare For Bioterrorism

A three-day bioterrorism drill in Tyler and Smith County began today.

It's part of the Governor's Homeland Security Strategy to make sure local emergency responders are prepared for incidents involving weapons of mass destruction.

One training site today was at ETMC in Tyler, where medical professionals decontaminated mock patients.

"The reason why we drill at this level is so that we know, from one end of the disaster to the actual discharge of the patient, what it's going to take to make sure that we can save as many lives as possible," Kenneth Webb, the hospital's hazardous materials coordinator, said.

State officials say lessons learned from a drill like this one can apply to other emergencies, like severe weather and hazardous material spills.
