County Chooses Private Company To Build New Jail

A decision was made today on who will build the new Smith County Jail to relieve overcrowding.

This afternoon, commissioners voted 4 to 1 abstention, to hire the company Corplan to design and construct the detention center.

Judge Becky Dempsey says Corplan estimates the cost at about $53 million. That's about $30 million less than what it would have cost the county to build the jail.

"A year ago, we were at an $85-million facility," Dempsey said. "And that didn't even have the purchase of the land included. It didn't include the furniture, the fixtures, and so forth, equipment necessary to go into the building."

The next step is for Corplan to meet with the sheriff's department to figure out design changes recommended by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
