Salvation Army Holds Fourth Of July Celebrations

The Salvation Army in Tyler hosted an Independence Day picnic for its residents. The event began with a prayer. Staff members and more than a dozen volunteers cooked and served food to participants. Lunch included barbecued ribs, ham, and hot dogs, along with all of the trimmings.

The Salvation Army says it's important to give people who are less fortunate the chance to enjoy the holiday. "Having a barbecue here at the Salvation Army gives our residents a chance to celebrate our country's birthday along with all of the residents of smith county," said Linda Edwards, the organization's Director of Community Relations.

Stephanie Clay, a Salvation Army resident says, "The salvation army is a special place and it's always doing something special for us. This is special."

More than 150 residents took part in Monday's event.
