Tyler Neighborhood Celebrates Fourth of July With A Picnic And Parade

Fourth of July celebrations took place all day throughout East Texas. One Tyler neighborhood celebrated Independence Day with a parade and picnic.

The parade kicked off Monday morning's festivities on Heines Drive. Hundreds of residents, along with State Representative Leo Berman, were on hand for the event.

There were plenty of activities -- hair painting, water dunking, games and plenty of prizes. "I won this hacky sack and this little ball and a flag," said 7-year-old William, one of the dozens of children who participated in the event.

Organizers say they're pleased with the patriotism that the celebration brought out in the community. Bari Walker, one of the people responsible for putting the event together said, "Really the main reason we wanted to do this was just to build our community. I wanted my kids to know that the Fourth of July is more than just about fireworks. I wanted them to realize that it's so important to be patriotic."
