Nacogdoches' Lamp-Lite Theater to perform WWII classic 'Mister Roberts'

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

It was just a few days ago that Turner Classics aired “Mister Roberts.”

Now Lamp-Lite Theatre audiences in Nacogdoches can see a live stage performance of the classic World War II story.

About 20 men are playing roles of a group of American sailors aboard a Navy cargo vessel in the Pacific. They get themselves into a lot of mischief, which explains why a live goat has a scene.

The stage has been transformed into a ship and extra attention is placed on costume accuracy. This rowdy, but realistic saga is based on a real-life experience.

"The author was really in the war and served three years in the Pacific,” said Sarah McMullan, the play’s director. “It became a widely popular movie and play and we've done it for three times. This is the third time now. It's got a lot of laughs in it. Lot of fun. Lot of drama."

There are several opportunities to attend “Mister Roberts.” The audience dress rehearsal is tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. A $5 donation is requested.

Other performances are Friday and Saturday this week and next at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.
