TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is trying to qualify for the PGA Tour's U.S. Open. Over 9,000 golfers have signed up for the major championship and only 51 exempt spots are up for grabs.

The first step for Romo begins on Monday at the local qualifier in Aledo, Texas. Over 115 golfers are scheduled to compete in the 18-hole qualifier and seven guys will earn berths to a sectional qualifier in June.

The U.S. Open is set for June 15-18 in Wisconsin, and the last player to go through local qualifying and win the major was back in 1969.
