Giant Sinkhole Stops Growing, Cause Unknown

A giant sinkhole in Smith County has stopped growing, but road crews have still not confirmed what caused it, although they do have their suspicions.

Yesterday morning, someone passing through FM 724 saw the sinkhole in the middle of the road. It's about two miles north of Tyler Pounds Regional Airport, just outside New Harmony.

According to TX-DOT, the hole is about 40 to 50 feet in diameter and up to 100 feet deep when it first appeared. The hole has filled in a lot since then.

A DPS helicopter from Garland flew over the hole to try to figure out what happened.

The location of that sinkhole, along a stretch of FM 724 between Highways 64 and 110 will be closed indefinitely.
