LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - The boy scout troop that Gov.Greg Abbott was a member of is now celebrating their 100th anniversary.
Abbott was a member of the Boy Scout Troop, number 201, in Longview. Current and former members of the troop will come together for a ceremony to honor the milestone on May 6, 2017. Troop 201 is one of the oldest Boy Scout Troops in the state of Texas. Troop 201 was chartered in Longview in March of 1917; only seven years after the Boy Scouts of America were founded.
On the troop's 50th anniversary in 1967, Gov. John Connally came to Longview to help bury a time capsule near the Scout Hut in Teague Park. On the 100th anniversary, that capsule will be unearthed and replaced with the assistance of Abbott and Gregg County District Judge David Brabham. Brabham is also a former member of the troop.
May 6, is also Election Day.
