Gospel Rappers, Singers Celebrate Juneteenth

Tyler's Juneteenth celebration continued this afternoon.

One-hundred-forty years ago today, on June 19 1865, word reached Texas that President Abraham Lincoln had freed slaves.

Today, hundreds of East Texans were entertained by gospel rappers and singers at St. Louis Park. Juneteenth has become a celebration not only of freedom, but also of African-American culture.

"It gives me a sense of pride to know that in spite of what they went through, we still have something to celebrate because it gives us something to tell our kids," Bernadette Hampton, of Tyler, said.

"We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go, as far as getting all of the American dream," Hughey Buchanan, of Tyler, said.

This weekend's events were sponsored by the Juneteenth Association of Tyler.
