East Texas State Fair To Move, Evolve

Tonight, new plans were unveiled for the future of the East Texas State Fair, which has outgrown its current location at the Tyler fairgrounds.

Board members say it will be at least five years before the fair is moved to its new location in West Tyler. It will be just west of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Highway 64 at Loop 323. The fairgrounds will cover 225 acres and cost at least several million dollars to build, according to the steering committee chair.

C.C. Baker says he wants to create "the fair of the future" by incorporating technology into agriculture.

"If you think about the technologies that we have today, how does that impact the animal industry?" he said. "And what do we do to let our East Texas community know what's coming down the road with technology?"

This year's fair will run from September 24 through October 1 at the current fairgrounds.

Board members say they want "the fair of the future" to be open year round.
