Pilot Dies After East Texas Helicopter Crash

A helicopter crashed in East Texas Wednesday morning, killing the pilot.

Now, officials are trying to determine what brought the helicopter down.

It happened south of Rusk in Cherokee County about 8 o'clock. The crash site is on the grassy median of Highway 69 near County Road 1102.

A family member told KLTV the pilot is the owner of JLF Aviation, 47-year old James Farmer of Jacksonville.

His business used the privately owned helicopter for sightseeing and aerial photography.

DPS officials said at some point, it appears Farmer hit a power line, but the exact cause of the crash is undetermined.

Workers at the Cherokee County Airport where Farmer took off in the helicopter Tuesday evening said he was on the return trip when he crashed.

They said Farmer had been flying there for almost four years and was very experienced.

"He flew twice a week and he really enjoyed flying, he was pretty active out here," said Clint Goff, Operations Manager with Skyways Aero. "He was the only helicopter based out here. It was a joy to come out here and see him fly. Everybody enjoyed watching him fly."

The Federal Aviation Agency began their investigation Wednesday afternoon.
