Gunman Threatens Civilians & Officers At Marion County Courthouse

Tense moments at an East Texas courthouse Tuesday when a gunman threatens to shoot civilians and officers. It happened just before 2 PM Tuesday at the Marion County courthouse in Jefferson.

Investigators say 38 year old Christopher Benefield of Lone Star had a rifle and threatened to shoot several innocent civilians as they stood outside the courthouse. Reports show Benefield then broke out a window of a lake patrol vehicle with the butt of his gun. That's when Benefield allegedly threatened to shoot an officer.

A county judge then activated a newly installed panic alarm system, allerting other officers of the threat. Reports show captain Bob Gibson and deputy sheriff Jason Carroll were then able to subdue Benefield and take him into custody.

Officers tell us they have been unable to get a mug shot of him Tuesday night because he was too violent.
