Suspect In Murder Case Is Arraigned

The man charged with stabbing an elderly Longview man to death, 28-year-old Kenneth Cooks was arraigned Monday morning.

Throughout the proceedings in Gregg County, Cooks appeared confused. Investigators say Cooks is from Longview, but he repeatedly told the court he thought he had travelled to East Texas from California. Deputies were armed with taser guns because they say Cooks had been violent in his jail cell.

Investigators say cooks stabbed 77-year-old James Millis at Millis' home near Lakeport. They say Cooks then dumped the body in an area known as the Talley Bottoms south of Longview. Neighbors who knew Millis say he was a kind man and they say they were shocked to find out about the murder.

"I thought it was pretty rough. Nothing happens out here. That's one of the pleasures of living in the country, nothing ever happens," says Doug Brown.

Surveillance video was made at a Longview convenience store sometime Saturday night. It shows Cooks in the store three separate times. Outside you can see the pick-up truck, investigators say belonged to the victim.

A motive for the killing has not been released.
