18-Wheeler, Bus Accident Injures Five Children

A tractor-trailer struck a bus carrying 25 children Friday, critically injuring five of them, officials said.

The bus, which was taking the children on a field trip, was traveling southbound on Florida's Turnpike when it was hit by a truck carrying lumber at about 9:45 a.m., Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue Capt. Don DeLucia said.

Television footage showed the front of the trailer hit the right side of the bus.

The five most seriously injured students were taken to a trauma center with possibly life-threatening injuries, DeLucia said. Others were crying hysterically and complaining of minor injuries, he said.

DeLucia estimated that the ages of the children ranged from 8 to 14. He said the cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

The bus belonged to the Migrant Association of South Florida, DeLucia said. According to its Web site, the group provides medical, educational and other services to the families of migrant farm workers.

Maria Puente, a spokeswoman for the association, said the children were being cared for while their parents worked. She said the bus also carried two association workers and a driver.
